World Trauma Day is marked on 17th October every year to propagate the need of averting deaths and disabilities caused by accidents or trauma. Statistics reveal that there is a high prevalence of road accidents happening in India every 1.9 minutes and 22.8% of all traumas are due to transport-related accidents. It is reported that almost 1 million people die and 20 million are hospitalized every year due to accidents. Tamil Nadu ranks first in road accidents for the third year according to data from the NCRB, with over 156 road accident cases per day . Tamil Nadu recorded 57,228 road accidents in 2019.

Speaking during the occasion Ms. Suneeta Reddy, Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals Group said, “While the pandemic has spread to 188 countries or regions across the world, road accidents affect more people than Covid-19 does. WHO states that road traffic accidents kill more than a million people each year, costing most countries 3% of their GDP and are the leading cause of death among children and young adults. India accounts for one-fifth of global deaths due to road accidents.”

She also added, “This day is a call-to-action to build robust measures to avoid disability and death caused by road accidents. Quality emergency and trauma care is essential to save lives, and the damage from trauma can be prevented with quick and early medical intervention. The critical need of the hour in India is public health education to inform citizens on the do’s and don’ts during trauma and accidents. Trauma injuries and death is a silent epidemic that we have to tackle. Let us pledge to be safe on the roads, to be aware and calm, and to stop and lend a helping hand.”

COVID19 has reinforced the need of safe distancing and following safety protocols. We COVID warriors should also be trauma warriors and spread the message of road safety within our community. A series of awareness activities have been planned in partnership with Tamil Nadu Police Department, Government agencies and NGO’s to highlight road safety.
